AMIDST TIFF, BLUE
MEN UNVEIL CAST
June 3,
2005

Toronto
Blue Man Group and local theatrical associations stepped up
the public relations war in advance of the multimedia show's
first Toronto performance on Tuesday. In the new state-of-the-art
$17-million Panasonic Theatre on Yonge Street; journalists
were introduced to the Canadian cast, crew and band, which
include several members of the Toronto Musicians' Association.
"This is a great job it's one of the best jobs
I've ever had," said Scott Bishop, a former Symphony
Nova Scotia percussionist who is one of the show's two Canadian
Blue Men.
Meanwhile,
organizers of the Blue Man Group boycott members from
Canadian Actors' Equity, the Toronto Musicians' Association
and the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees
who are unhappy with the New York-based Group's decision not
to work with local unions demonstrated outside.
On hand was former Blue Man head of audio Mark Finkelstein,
a rock concert technician with 30 years of experience, who
recently quit the Toronto production. Finkelstein said he
resigned after discovering he would receive less pay and hours
than initially promised and would receive only the basic benefits
mandated by law for his first year. He also had personal differences
with the production's sound designer.
"The broken promises on my pay and benefits were insulting
enough," said Finkelstein, who said he approached IATSE
on his own initiative. "But I have never been so verbally
abused and shown such lack of respect for my knowledge and
experience as I was by [the sound designer] during my short,
unhappy time with Blue Man Group." Opening night set
is June 19.
