Ms. Lynn McQueen
Canadian Actors' Equity Association
44 Victoria Street, 12th Floor
Toronto, ON M5C 3C4

Dear Sister McQueen:

On behalf of the 230,000 members of UFCW Canada, let me add our voices to the many others calling on the Toronto production of the Blue Man Group to respect our city's long tradition of engaging only unionized performing artists, musicians and stagecraft staff in major theatrical stage productions.

Toronto is one of North America's most important and profitable live entertainment venues. There can be no doubt that much, if not most, of this success is due to the professionalism, knowledge, experience, commitment and reliability - on top of the tremendous talent - of the growing number of men and women represented by our city's entertainment industry unions.

UFCW Canada represents many workers in the food and hospitality sectors who depend on a vibrant live entertainment industry more than most people could realize, and not just in Toronto. Food that is harvested and processed by UFCW Canada members from British Columbia to Newfoundland finds its way to Toronto entertainment district restaurants and hotels. There are hundreds of other examples of the complex interrelations among workers in occupations as diverse as music and fishing or stage lighting and textile manufacturing. Not too far below the surface of our seemingly different lives, we are all connected to often remarkable degrees.

It would be an economic, artistic and socio-cultural blunder to throw a wrench into Toronto's smoothly functioning live entertainment infrastructure so that a few foreign investors who care nothing for our community can squeeze (or so they believe) a few more dollars out of our local economy. They will leave town as soon as they have extracted all they can from us, leaving behind divisions and wounds that could take years, if not decades, to heal. We have seen this happen in some of our own industries over our 100+ year history and the results are always tragic and unnecessary.

Please be assured that we completely support your goals of representation recognition for the unions in your Coalition by the Blue Man Group. You can rely on our continuing activism on your behalf in this vital matter of importance to us all.
In solidarity,

Michael J. Fraser
